MYOFUNCTIONAL THERAPY

Orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) is an exercise based protocol to strengthen the tongue and other orofacial muscles to promote proper oral resting posture and correct orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) to improve overall health.

Individuals of all ages can benefit from myofunctional therapy. From a young age, promoting proper resting position and proper function will guide in optimal jaw growth and development for better airway health. As an adult, correcting the habits that are already present can help resolve symptoms caused by these dysfunctions.

Goals of OMT:

Tongue resting up in the roof of the mouth.

Breathing through your nose.

Lips together at rest.

Proper swallow pattern.

Examples of OMDs:

Tongue tie.

Tongue thrust.

Thumb/finger sucking.

Grinding/clenching.

Mouth breathing.

Snoring.

Sleep disordered breathing.
